The Human Performance Laboratory

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) operates as the research facility within the HKRD Department. Primarily, four faculty from Kinesiology/Exercise Science have the responsibility for coordinating research efforts which emanates from the HPL.

Kinesiology/Exercise Science faculty, and staff are dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge regarding the health and well being of special groups through research and the subsequent dissemination of information through educational outreach, service programs, publications, and research presentations. Specifically, the focus of the faculty is on the study of the health, exercise, and stress concerns of special populations.

The goals are to provide a model for research on the health, exercise and stress concerns of special populations and to be a center for the collection and dissemination of research. The specific groups targeted by the researchers in the laboratory are women, pre-adolescents, and the elderly. Research is the primary objective of the HPL. Promoting service programs and educational outreach directly related to the research mission is the secondary focus of the HPL.

HPL faculty function basically on three levels:

Since the last self-study, the Director of the HPL has also been named the Director of the Center of Corporate and Employee Wellness, and the HPL has been designated as the research facility for interdisciplinary studies on aging (Office for Studies on Aging). The HPL has increased its Fitness for Fun funding and number of participants, and has received additional TeleFunds to support HPL activities. Both undergraduate and graduate students in Kinesiology/Exercise Science early in their courses of study are exposed ("connected") to the HPL through a variety of classroom learning activities and experiences.
