» Concentration in Athletic Training

Welcome Prospective Athletic Training Graduate Student

The Department of Health Science, Kinesiology, Recreation and Dance would like to welcome you to our Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Athletic Training. The department provides leadership in teaching, research and scholarship in the discipline of exercise science. A major commitment of the department is to discover, interpret, disseminate and apply discipline-specific knowledge to the university, state, national and international communities. The department pursues excellence in educational programs including physical activity instruction, undergraduate academic programs and graduate academic programs. Graduate students experience the level of individual attention that is usually found only at a small liberal arts college. Faculty members are accessible and involved in the learning process as both teachers and active scholars. Many faculty members are conducting cutting-edge research and are internationally known leaders in their fields. As mentors, faculty members involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research, but they also encourage the students to explore their own research areas.

The graduate program prepares individuals to function as scientists, educators and practitioners as athletic trainers in providing quality health care to injured active individuals. The mission of the department is to enhance interdisciplinary cooperation and assist departmental faculty in securing competitive external funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus the discipline. It is the mission of the athletic training program to validate and expand the existing body of knowledge in athletic training through scientific inquiry. Coursework in physiology, current trends, modalities, therapeutic exercise, pharmacology and others provide the didactic experiences that advance the students' professional training. Clinical practice is provided through assignments in a variety of settings such as the University of Arkansas' NCAA Division I athletic training facilities, local high schools and sports medicine clinics.

Northwest Arkansas offers a very resourceful area of the country for quality learning in your chosen discipline as well as an opportunity to pursue your personal endeavors and hobbies. Washington County and the surrounding area is saturated with numerous professionals in medicine, corporate business, restaurants and family recreational opportunities. Fayetteville offers several public recreation facilities such as parks, lakes, fishing, hiking, camping areas and the Walton Arts Center that are nestled in the Ozark Mountains. In terms of private commerce, Fayetteville is within two hours of the entertainment mecca Branson, Mo. Here people enjoy a variety of county music entertainers, camping, hiking and Silver Dollar City. Fayetteville is six hours north of Dallas, two hours east of Tulsa, four hours south of Kansas City and four hours west of St. Louis.

The faculty of HKRD encourage you to pursue your graduate degree in our department and establish learning opportunities and future endeavors with our exercise science faculty. If you have any further questions concerning the graduate degree program in Athletic Training Program, contact Program Director of Athletic Training Education Dr. Jeff Bonacci (bonacci@uark.edu) at (479) 575-4112.
